2021冬春季，在前述閱讀訓練的基礎上，老師決定帶給同學們進一步的挑戰，把他在哥倫比亞大學教授哥大本科新生的人文核心課程《Literature Hunmanities 人文文學》稍加簡縮后介紹給廣大美高學生。希望孩子們可以從閱讀西方經典人文著作中了解和洞察西方文明和西方文化的起源和脈絡，從而更好的理解西方文化，理解近現代西方人文的思想革新。

惠宜教育2021冬春美高西方經典人文文學精讀課程，是哥倫比亞大學本科核心課程（Core Curriculum at Columbia College）人文文學（Literature Humanities）簡潔縮小版（哥倫比亞大學對人文文學課程的詳細介紹請點擊文末“閱讀原文”）。課程通過精讀多本經典西方敘述故事性小說，旨在去分析西方文化價值觀、哲學假設、以及西方美學原則的起源與演變，并在此基礎上，學習如何清楚地思考、討論、及創造性地論述與此相關的西方人文文化問題。

核心問題：

為了能夠更好得理解課本內容，激發大家的課堂討論，本課程將聚焦以下這些問題：人是什么？什么是人類的善？什么是人的滿足或者幸福？是不是每個人都有平等的權利去追求自己的幸福？什么是人類最基礎的心理能力，比如推理、情緒等？在家庭、戰爭、或者與上帝的關系中，人合適位置究竟在哪里？他們自由嗎？是不是某一些人更“值得”自由或成功？究竟在何處可以實現一個人的自然本性？為了實現人的自然本性，內心的拷問或者外向的經歷是否是必要的？哪些誘惑或者困難阻礙了人們的正常生活？社會習俗在人類生活中扮演什么角色？人們知道何為知識及如何獲取知識？想象力、理性、或者經驗是最重要的知識來源嗎？藝術家在獲取和傳播真理中扮演什么角色？敘述故事或者擺弄文字在生活和追求真理中起什么作用？

請在閱讀我們課堂用書的過程中，積極地思考這些問題，我們會在課堂上深入討論，同時我們的寫作作業也將圍繞這些問題展開。

Course Description

This course offers a small part of what Columbia University calls "Literature of the Humanities" by engaging students in intensive study of some of the most significant texts of Western literature—ones that center on the idea of narrative or storytelling as a vehicle for discovery. The goals of our course are (1) to analyze the origins and transformations of our cultural values, philosophical assumptions, and aesthetic principles and (2) to learn how to think, discuss, and write clearly and creatively about them.?

Core Questions

In order to organize our classroom discussions and encourage interconnections among texts, we will focus on some fundamental questions: What is a human being? What is human good? What is human contentment or happiness? Do all people have an equal chance to attain happiness?? What are the most important or essential human faculties and capacities (e.g. reason, emotions)? What is the proper place of a person (e.g., in the family, in battle, with god)?? How free are they? Are some people more “deserving” of freedom and success than others? Where does a human being best fulfill her or his nature?? Is an inward or outward journey necessary to fulfill that nature?? What temptations or difficulties prevent a proper human life?? What role do social conventions play in life?? What can people know and how do they acquire knowledge?? Is imagination, reason, or experience the most important source of knowledge? What role does the artist play in the acquisition and transmission of the truth?? What roles do storytelling and the manipulation of words play in life and the attainment of truth?

Keep these questions in mind as you read our four texts: Jane Austen's?Pride and Prejudice，Michel de Montaigne's?Essays，William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, and Toni Morrison's Beloved. They will form the basis for our classroom discussions and written assignments.?
